Arguably the most important part of fulfilling our mandate of building stronger communities is supporting the most vulnerable in Aboriginal communities. Its common knowledge more needs to be done to support women and children but finding realistic, culturally aligned, and sustainable solutions is a challenge.
This is a topic close the heart of our CEO Liz Morgan-Brett who met with Minister Worden today to talk about how AIG can work with government to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal women and children. Kate Worden’s ministries include Territory Families and Urban Housing, Disabilities, Sport, and Multicultural Affairs in the NT.
“It was a really positive and valuable meeting” said Liz who introduced the Remote Laundries project to demonstrate how shipping containers could be used for safe spaces for women and children not just in remote communities, but also in the more built up areas of the NT.
Our Remote Laundries are set in 40 foot shipping containers and can be set up and moved easily. They are secure and fully automated and offer the ideal setup to provide free washing and drying to any community regardless of how remote. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Liz wanted to talk with Minster Worden about the innovation used for our project and the potential for that style of thinking to be used in other ways to support communities.
Through our Business Support Services AIG works with communities to set up locally owned and managed businesses that provide employment opportunities and generate income. Through this lens, Liz talked with Minister Worden about the Bagala Social Club which is set to be launched in 2022 in Barunga. The club will be run by the community and could offer opportunities to support sport, health and wellbeing more broadly.
Liz and Kate also talked about the 10 year plan for sport in the NT, and how AIG could be involved in supporting initiatives in Aboriginal communities.
“It was a privilege to spend time with Minister Warden and her team” said Liz who firmly believes in working collectively to create new solutions for old problems.
