There’s something pretty special about seeing an idea that started in one community continue to grow.
What began with our first Remote Laundry in Barunga in 2019 has grown into a project operating across communities in the Northern Territory, built around a simple idea: everyone should have access to clean clothes and bedding.
Now, we’re incredibly excited to share the next chapter.
New Australian Government funding for remote community laundries will see new and upgraded facilities delivered across more than a dozen remote communities and homelands across the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia.
For AIG, this means we have received funding to establish new Remote Laundries in Lajamanu (NT), Nauiyu (NT), Mulan (WA) and Laura (QLD).
While this announcement means more Remote Laundries, for us, it also means new relationships and more impact.
Every community is different. Every community has its own people, priorities, strengths and ways of doing things.
Our job isn’t to arrive with all the answers. It’s to listen, build relationships and work alongside communities to understand what a Remote Laundry can look like for them.
Our team will work with Lajamanu, Mulan, Nauiyu and Laura taking the time to engage locally and build the partnerships that will underpin each laundry long after the first washing cycle.
This funding is an exciting milestone for AIG, but receiving the funding is only the beginning.
The real work starts now.
It starts with conversations, listening and building trust. It means working with Traditional Owners, local organisations and community members to make sure each laundry responds to the needs of the people who will use it.
We’re incredibly grateful to the Prime Minister, Mr Anthony Albanese and NIAA for pushing the initiative and getting it over the line. It means the world to see investment in practical infrastructure that can make a meaningful difference in everyday life, and to the Heart Foundation, who have walked alongside AIG in advocating for greater investment in community laundries.
