Undoubtedly the success of our Remote Laundries Project lies in how simple the concept is. Our laundries offer washing facilities that clean clothes and bedding which contributes to a healthier community.
A new solution to old problems
Overcrowding and a lack of washing facilities is a serious issue, with tragic consequences, in remote Aboriginal communities.
The Remote Laundries Project is a solution to these issues, driven by Traditional Owners and tailored to the unique needs of each individual community.
Launched in 2019, the project provides Aboriginal people with a purpose-built, free laundry facility with unique inclusions that saw AIG secure various patents for design and function.
In the five communities where our laundries now operate, they have:
- Improved health
- Improved quality of life
- Created employment for community members
In 2021, a cost-benefit analysis by KPMG found that over five years, one laundry provides $3.7 million worth of net savings to government.
Meet our laundries
We currently have five laundries in operation:
- Casuarina –opened in northern Darwin in 2020, employs 3 people.
- Angurugu – opened on Groote Eylandt in 2021, employs 5 people.
- Milyakburra – opened in 2022 on Groote Eylandt, employs 5 people.
- Gunbalanya – opened in August 2024, employs 5 people.
- Umbakumba – opened in October 2025, employs 6 people.
- Borroloola – opened November 2025
In 2025/26 new laundries will be delivered to:
- Yirrkala
- Yarrawonga
- Wurrumiyanga
Transitioned to community ownership:
- Barunga –opened in 2019
