In November, we proudly celebrated the launch of the Umbakumba Laundry marking the 3rd Remote Laundry on Groote Eylandt, alongside Angurugu and Milyakburra.
Although the facility was built several months earlier, bringing this launch to life was no small achievement. Officially opened on 25th of November, the Umbakumba Laundry represents another important step in expanding access to safe, reliable laundry services across the island.
The launch day itself was truly special. With Groote Vibrations playing on the radio throughout the afternoon, families coming together, amazing dancers, and the sound of the didgeridoo, the celebration reflected the strength, culture and community spirit of Umbakumba. It was a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
This milestone would not have been possible without the ongoing partnership and support of the Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Trust (GEAT). GEAT has been a continuous and deeply committed partner of AIG and a strong advocate for the Remote Laundries Project. Through this partnership, all three laundries on Groote Eylandt, Angurugu, Milyakburra and now Umbakumba, have become a reality.
Most importantly, thank you to the Umbakumba community for your support, trust and enthusiasm and the 6 laundry workers, Alianna, Cheryl, Sherita, Shirlenn, Vanessa, Zeanetta. In its first 2 weeks of operation alone, the Umbakumba Laundry recorded 172 cycles, a strong reflection of how valued and needed this service is.
We are incredibly proud to see all three Groote Eylandt laundries operating and look forward to continuing this journey alongside the community in the months and years ahead.
